Nothing signifies good health quite like a glowing, lit-from-within complexion. So how do we get radiant skin? The secret lies in a holistic approach, spanning lifestyle, skincare, and consistent routines.

Our skin goes through a lot in a day, exposed to things like pollution, chemicals and UV rays, all of which can rob it of radiance. And that’s before we’ve even stopped to think about the things that are going on inside our bodies. A lack of sleep, high levels of stress and a poor diet each have a part to play in how we look on the outside.

Ask any beauty professional and they’ll tell you: You won’t find the secrets of how to get glowing skin from a stick of foundation. That’s not to say there aren’t products that can fake that dewy look. Rather, getting a complexion that permanently looks as though you’re fresh off vacation—which is to say, healthy, radiant, and glowing—is a combination of product, practice, and patience. Glowing skin, here we come.

Try a minimalist makeup approach and let your skin breathe

Our skin is our biggest organ and it thrives on oxygen and blood flow. And when there’s more oxygen delivered to your face; your skin will have more time to repair itself and regenerate its elastin and collagen. That means, take a break from concealers, foundation and airbrush makeup which are all bandaid’s for healthy skin. Just because makeup is labeled as “long wear” does not mean that you should necessarily use it that way.

Know your skin type and what it needs

Understanding your skin type is a crucial step towards achieving healthy and glowing skin. Your skin type determines how your skin reacts to certain products and treatments. There are primarily four skin types: normal, dry, oily, and combination. Dry skin lacks moisture and can feel tight and flaky. Oily skin produces excess sebum, leading to a shiny appearance and a higher risk of acne. Combination skin has both oily and dry areas. Knowing your skin type helps you choose the right skincare products and tailor your routine to address specific concerns and maintain optimal skin health.

Consider the foods you eat

A healthy diet plays a crucial role in achieving natural skin glow. What you eat directly impacts the health and appearance of your skin. Including nutrient-rich foods in your diet can promote skin health, enhance radiance, and combat various skin concerns. Foods rich in antioxidants, such as fruits and vegetables, help protect the skin from damage caused by free radicals. Vitamin C, found in citrus fruits and berries, promotes collagen production and brightens the skin. Omega-3 fatty acids, present in fatty fish and seeds, support skin hydration and reduce inflammation. Avoid sugar, dairy, processed foods and the trans fats found in fried and processed foods. By avoiding or limiting these foods, you’re supporting the health of your skin.

Remember to hydrate

Proper hydration is essential for maintaining healthy skin. When your skin is well-hydrated, it appears plump, smooth, and radiant. On the other hand, dehydration can lead to dryness, tightness, and dullness. Water is crucial for maintaining the skin’s moisture balance and preventing water loss through the skin barrier.

Treat yourself to a lymphatic detox

For those of you who are new to lymphatic detoxification, it’s a technique that encourages your lymph, the clear fluid that travels through your lymphatic system carrying cells to help fight infection and other diseases, to move through your body. Your lymphatic system, unlike your heart, doesn’t have its own pumping system, so when lymph gets stuck, in areas like your face, chest, arms and legs, it can cause a puffy appearance that can be flushed out through the gentle manipulation of lymphatic drainage via your lymph nodes (along your neck, under your armpits, chest, groin area and legs). Your lymph nodes then carry all that fluid to your kidneys where it’s processed, and then you pee it out.

My favorite DIY lymphatic drainage techniques to try at home

You can incorporate lymphatic drainage techniques into your skincare routine at home to promote toxin removal and enhance skin health. Here are some techniques you can try:

  • Facial massage: Use gentle, circular motions to massage your face and neck, starting from the center and moving outward.
  • Dry brushing: Use a soft-bristled brush to gently brush your skin in upward strokes, towards the heart.
  • Manual manipulation: Gently apply pressure to specific lymph nodes, such as those behind the ears and under the jawline, using your fingertips.
  • Use lymphatic drainage tools: There are various tools available, such as facial rollers and gua sha stones, that can aid in lymphatic drainage when used with proper techniques.

By incorporating these techniques into your skincare routine regularly, you can support lymphatic drainage, promote toxin removal, and achieve clearer, healthier skin.

Simplify Your Skincare Routine

When it comes to achieving a healthy skin glow, a simple and effective skincare routine can often be more beneficial than a complex one. A minimalist skincare routine focuses on using a few key products that target your specific skin concerns and provide the necessary nourishment and protection for your skin. By simplifying your skincare routine, you can reduce the risk of irritation, save time and money, and maintain consistency in caring for your skin. A simple skincare routine that includes cleansing, moisturizing, and sun protection can provide the foundation for healthy, glowing skin.

Key products for a simplified skincare routine

A simplified skincare routine can be achieved by focusing on a few key products that address your specific skin concerns and promote overall skin health. Here are some essential products for a simplified skincare routine:

  • Gentle cleanser: Use a mild, pH-balanced cleanser to remove dirt, oil, and impurities without stripping the skin of its natural oils.
  • Moisturizer: Choose a moisturizer suitable for your skin type to hydrate and nourish the skin, promoting a healthy and supple complexion.
  • Sunscreen: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily to protect your skin from harmful UV rays and prevent premature aging.
  • Serum or treatment: Consider adding a targeted serum or treatment, such as a vitamin C serum or retinol, to address specific skin concerns, such as dullness, hyperpigmentation, or fine lines.

By incorporating these essential products into your skincare routine, you can simplify your regimen while still effectively addressing your skin’s needs and achieving a natural, healthy skin glow.

Glowing skin is a reflection of your overall health and wellness. Stay informed, choose products mindfully, and be kind to yourself. The most important thing of all is to care for your entire being. A holistic approach will make your face glow brighter than any one habit, remedy, or product.
