A Simple Floral Installation Using Green Stems

Something amazing happened yesterday afternoon. Eric and I became an aunt and uncle for the first time! We are thrilled about the little addition and so thankful everyone is happy and healthy. My husband is also excited to have another male in his life – he is surrounded by girls. In honor of the arrival, I thought I would share this extremely simple floral installation I made for the baby shower we hosted for Brooks and Eric’s sister Sam a few months ago.

When I host for the holidays or special occasions, I love to create a piece that gives the setting a “wow-factor”. I also have learned to keep things simple. This whimsical, leafy chandelier did both. Lately, I have been using our light fixture above our dining room table to hang flowers to create a “hanging centerpiece”, or floral installation. Luckily Eric doesn’t mind helping me engineer how the piece will be hung, because sometimes it involves screws.

What You’ll Need

Steps to Create This Floral Installation

  1. Spray paint the hula hoop.
  2. Trim the stems to your desired length.
  3. Wire each ruscus stem to the hoop, approximately 3 inches apart, or so that the leaves touch a neighboring stem.
  4. Hang the hoop of stems.

Making this floral installation was seriously easy and the results were so pretty. It look me around 30 minutes to attach the stems to the hula hoop and get it hung from the ceiling. Total project time is a bit longer as you have to wait for the spray paint to dry before adding the stems. We painted the hoop white to match our ceiling so it would blend in. Once the paint dried, I wired the ruscus stems around the entire hoop, about three inches apart from each other. The leaves on each stem were touching each other at this distance and made the installation look full, but whimsical.

How you attach this piece to the ceiling is really up to you. My husband wants to be sure that everything is secure, so he did use screws and then patched the holes after taking it down. The hoop with the greens attached is fairly light weight, so hanging it from fishing line could work as well. This has been one of my favorite floral installations I have put together. It was so easy (always a plus) and it looked beautiful. Definitely added the “wow-factor” I was looking for to this baby shower.
