I am always looking for something fun and unique to try. It usually gets me into trouble because then I make things complicated. Complicated decorating ideas, complicated DIY projects and complicated recipes. So, when I started to brainstorm mommy and me Halloween costume ideas for Lydia and I, I promised myself I would keep it simple. She is only 1.5 years old, so really, what parts of the costume is she actually going to keep on?! Keeping all that in mind, I landed on mommy and me sugar skulls.

These costumes may have been inspired by my obsession with flower crowns (see a how-to here), or because of my crazy excitement for the new Disney / Pixar movie Coco. BUT, I did decide that it could be fun to try and put a little face paint on my toddler. That is a perk to this costume idea. It can be as simple or intricate as you want. I started by adding basic rings around Lydia’s eyes, gave her a sugar skull nose and wah-la! You never know what you are going to be able to get away with when it comes to toddlers, and that’s why I loved this costume idea. Lydia maxed out right around the time I started adding the details around her eyes, and it still looks some-what like a sugar skull. I know, it’s a little sloppy, but it’s still cute, right? (She’s one people….one).
I also wasn’t ballsy enough to put black all over her little face, so I opted in for white face paint. It doesn’t show up as well as black, but it does give the look a sweeter vibe, if that’s what you’re going for!
Putting the Costumes Together
The other great thing about these mommy and me Halloween costumes? They were so simple and completely DIY. I literally only spent money on the face paint and some white eye shadow and I also made the flower crowns myself. Cheap AND easy! You can grab current items from you and your toddler’s closet. If you want to do a little shopping instead, buy classic pieces for the costume that you can both turn around and wear on a regular basis. This costume idea has plenty of room for customization. If you are specifically interested in what Lydia and I are wearing, I have in linked in the shop the post section. Her amazingly gorgeous dress is from Pleiades Handmade.
To make the flower pieces for the costumes, I grabbed a 3-inch hair clip for myself with enough real estate to hot-glue the flowers to it. I had these faux flowers laying around the house that I decided to trim up and use. For Lydia’s flower crown I used a headband that I could easily hot-glue to, and put on her head. Remember how I knew we would have problems keeping parts of her costume on? This is where we had issues! She wasn’t really interested in wearing the headband…at all. So these simple mommy and me sugar skull costumes are a win!
