Excited to share our Spring Floral Mother’s Day workshop in Sturgis, SD. On the drive over, it downpoured until the half way mark where I was presented with a stunning double rainbow – the perfect way to kick off the day. A group of mother’s, daughters, and friends gathered together at The Local for a morning of playing with flowers. It was late morning when everyone arrived, and a mimosa bar greeted them at the door as they dodged the spouts of hail that had now started. Each work station was set with a bundle of spring blooms, and the tools to create crowns and wreaths.
After deciding on a mimosa flavor, the ladies picked a spot at the table where I started to share my personal tips and tricks on handling flowers. From my point of view, the table was gorgeous, filled with flowers and friendly faces. The Local has beautiful original hardwood floors and large, custom made wood table tops. To keep with our garden theme, wooden bistro chairs surrounded the table and aged terrecota pots were used the house the scissors, wire and shears. I was able to speak with ease to this group. These women, some who I had just met, showed me kindness as I demonstrated attaching small bundles of greens and flowers to the base of their choice. We discussed symmetry/a-symmetry and visualizing the piece before cutting. Did they want a structured look, or a more whimsical look? Consider a focal point, and don’t be afraid to trim or remove areas of each stem in order for it to work with the design.
Once they began, the creativity was amazing – even though most of them started off the morning by telling me that they were not creative. I always say, my favorite part of hosting a floral workshop is watching each piece become a direct reflection of the attendee’s unique personality. I am so happy that these ladies were able to join us, through the questionable weather and during a busy weekend. Meeting new women and the good conversation always make it worth it to me.
I will end by saying that I could not have done this event without the amazing support of Emily Costopoulos of The Local who graciously opened her doors for this workshop. She also gifted everyone with these amazing photos to take with them as memories from the event. She is, and will always be one of my favorite photographers. And to our amazing sponsors that provided a goodie bag to each attendee: Sturgis Coffee, Stacey Balster with Be Well, Jessica Aluise with Isagenix, Cheyenne McGriff of Re/Max Results and Black Hills Rally & Gold!
