In a recent conversation, visionary Filipino designer Bessie Besana chose to reminisce about his journey as a fashion designer from his childhood and shift to the creative side in his late twenties. Born and raised in the Philippines, Besana’s journey into fashion began with humble roots.

From his early days as a student at Philippine couturier Slim Higgins’ fashion school, he understood the significance of embracing the colorful and multi-faceted heritage of the country through his designs. He firmly believes that “the biggest asset of the Philippine fashion industry are the islands that come with it,” emphasizing his belief in the richness of Filipino culture and tradition.

Initially starting as an engineer, he hesitated to dabble in fashion and create a full-time career. “Back then and even now, Filipinos always thought about the societal expectations and pressure that we encounter daily, specifically from family. It wasn’t something that people were open to. Either you had to be a Doctor or an Engineer. It was important to have a sustainable income, he explained.

In Hong Kong, his technicality and precision as an engineer won him contracts with companies such as CBRE and Hewlett-Packard. Yet, he felt that something was missing. He knew he needed to pursue the path that would prompt him to make a pivotal decision to pursue his passion: fashion. Encouraged by friends and mentors, Besana boldly moved to transition into the dynamic world of haute couture despite uncertainties and challenges.

Bessie on His Beginnings in the Fashion Industry

He joyfully recalled his first class at Slims, “It all began with a shift dress. I was experimenting with the silhouette, and when it was finished, that’s when I realized that I’m a designer.” Subsequently, his journey progressed with creating a bridesmaid dress that demonstrated his quintessential style — a clean, chic, and elegant aesthetic representing freedom and creativity. In finding his artistic voice, he was able to create the brand that he envisioned.

As the conversation delved into influences and aspirations, the designer admired industry giants such as Michael Cinco and Monique Lhuillier, alongside a penchant for Oscar de la Renta’s craftsmanship and Zac Posen’s aesthetic. Balancing tradition with innovation, the designer sought to incorporate Filipino motifs and imagery into his designs, fostering a sense of cultural identity amidst a global landscape.

Since then, Bessie Besana’s name has become synonymous with elegance, grace, and creativity; his creations have been favored by celebrities, society dames, and beauty queens. Most notably, his stunning collaboration with Miss Universe 2015 and fashion’s newest IT Girl, Pia Wurtzbach- Jauncey for her wedding at the sandy beach of the Seychelles Islands,  turned heads worldwide for its intricate craftsmanship and silhouette.  “ I have always believed, even from my early days as a designer, that it was important to celebrate pure femininity by empowering women through my work.”
Their partnership wasn’t just about creating her dream gown; it was a love note to their friendship, about weaving dreams into a tangible reality. This began with a casual conversation between long-time friends, where Pia expressed her desire for a small, intimate wedding. Even though Wurtzbach had plenty of offers from different brands and designers, she chose Bessie to create what would now be known as the most iconic gown she had ever worn. What followed was a meticulous process of collaboration, where Pia’s vision merged seamlessly with Bessie’s creativity.

The gown was a stunning blend of tradition and modernity that embodied Pia’s essence. A traditional mermaid silhouette adorned with overlaid lace and intricate details reflected her elegance, while subtle nuances added a modern flair. However, there were plenty of hurdles to this project, from time differences to virtual fittings and conflicting schedules. However, Bessie’s unwavering determination overshadowed these challenges, and he readily sourced unique fabrics and last-minute changes. Every hurdle was met with resilience and creativity. As a result, we saw a stunning work of art that surpassed expectations and left a lasting impression.

Beyond this milestone, Bessie’s journey is flourishing. Last March, he introduced the launch of FILIPINXT, a US-based fashion showcase that focuses on the rise of Filipino talent to the global stage; it was a successful event that will be one to see for New York Fashion Week.

For Bessie, it’s about bridging the cultural gap between the East and the West, “ I want to elevate the image of Filipino fashion and designers on the global stage; frankly, it’s about time that the world sees the renowned talents that we have hailing from our homeland,” he explained. Recently, he went back to the Philippines, collaborating once more with the Marriott Bonvoy as part of its yearly bridal showcase, “Marry Me at Marriott,” along with Wilson Limon ( Nino Franco) , Veejay Floresca, and Hannah Kong.

In a world where creativity often battles burnout, Bessie’s approach is both pragmatic and inspiring. By compartmentalizing his work and taking breaks to nurture his creativity, he finds balance and sustains his passion. His advice to young designers echoes his journey—hone your craft, push boundaries, and never compromise on your vision.

As Bessie Besana continues to weave dreams into reality, his legacy shines as a beacon of Filipino talent and creativity. With each stitch, he leaves an indelible mark on the world of fashion, reminding us that true artistry knows no bounds.

Besana is not just a designer but a visionary reshaping Filipino fashion’s landscape. With a keen eye for detail and an unwavering commitment to his craft, Besana has made a name for himself both locally and internationally.
