From childhood TV obsession to captivating on-screen roles, actress Nafessa Williams has always known exactly where she was meant to be. Inspired by the poise of Phylicia Rashad and the playful wit of Keisha Knight Pulliam, she saw reflections of herself in the characters she loved—and that early spark never dimmed. With a career leap that began in a law office and led to an audition that changed everything, she’s since carved a path rooted in passion, persistence, and powerful storytelling. Whether channeling the quiet strength of Robyn Crawford or stepping boldly into the vibrant world of 1980s fashion, Williams brings a fierce authenticity to every role she takes on. We caught up with her to talk early influences, scene-stealing wardrobes, and the exciting next chapter she’s writing behind the camera.
First, please tell us about when was the first time you realized you wanted to be an actress?
I was about 4 or 5 years old when I knew I wanted to be an actress. I was watching the Cosby Show and I remember seeing myself in both Phylicia Rashad and Keisha Knight Pulliam. I love how sassy and outspoken Rudy’s character was, how beautiful, independent and charming Claire Huxtable was. I totally wanted to be like Claire Huxtable when I grew up. Seeing brown skin like mine on tv every week made me want to figure out how to become an actress. I was fascinated with the world of tv as a kid, I used to write my own tv guide of all my favorite tv shows in my homework book. I was obsessed.
You were studying criminal justice and working in a law firm before transitioning to acting. What was the pivotal moment that made you realize acting was your true calling?
I was working in a law firm and hated it. I thought, there’s no way I can come here everyday. It was boring. So I took the day off, went on an audition, got fired and the rest is history.

In I Wanna Dance with Somebody, you portrayed Robyn Crawford, Whitney Houston’s close friend and confidante. What drew you to this role, and how did you prepare for such a nuanced character?
I love all things Whitney so this was easy. My goal for taking on this character was to learn as much as I could about Robyn and be authentic in telling her story. I did a deep dive into Robyn’s book ‘A Song For You’ which served me a lot, and went back to the 80’s for some style inspo. Watched as many video clips I could find of Robyn which weren’t many and told the truth from what I learned it to be. Robyn played a very pivotal role in Whitney’s personal and professional life and I thought it was time for that story to be told. I loved Robyn’s loyalty to Whitney, so I led with that.
Could you tell us about your character in Hulu’s upcoming series Rivals? What aspects of the role excited you the most?
Yes, Miss Cameron Cook is strong, smart and fierce. I really love how courageous and bold she is. She’s so clever and always 10 steps ahead of everyone else. Not much scares her.
Given the show’s setting in the 1980s, how did the costume and set designs help you immerse yourself in the era and inform your character’s development?
Omg, the wardrobe is my favorite part of the show. 80’s fashion was so bold and colorful. The red nails and lipstick definitely helped me tap into the era. I. remember watching my mom and my aunts dressing up in the 80’s as a kid so it was really special to relive those moments but as an adult.

Looking back on your journey from Philly to Hollywood, what advice would you give to aspiring actors facing uncertainty in their careers?
I would tell them to make the decision to go for it and dont stop until you get there. Study as much as possible, get into a great scene study class and surround yourself with other actors, if possible actors who are more experienced than you. Find mentors and ask questions. Mentors are great, because you can learn from their mistakes.
Beyond acting, you’ve expressed interest in fashion and storytelling. Are there any future projects or ventures you’re excited to explore?
Yes, I’ve gotten into producing and developing over the past few years so I’m working on a few projects that I’m really passionate about. I can’t wait to share more details!
